South Africa has always been intriguing to us at Art of the Table. We have carried wines from the region before it was cool to do so! Back then (14 years ago!) we could get our hands on Pinotage (a leathery, rather big and generally very barnyard-y showing back then) Since then Amy has been to South Africa where it was reinforced how fabulous the wine culture there has become over the last ten years. Great values, huge flavors, great families behind endless projects! We’re excited to have these selections in the store – especially the Ashbourne, a favorite from Amy’s trip that wasn’t available in Michigan until just a few short weeks ago!
Protea Cabernet
They say never to judge a book by its cover (or a wine by its bottle) but here is a wine whose beauty is the same both inside and out. Named after the national flower of South Africa, Protea is a unique and exotic flower that gives inspiration for this unique and expressive Bordeaux styled wine that finds a way to be so familiar yet so full of its own life. Inside the wine is full and juicy with fresh blackberry and tangy raspberry notes giving way to an espresso and spice filled finish. This is the perfect wine to pair with just about anything off of the grill… it might even help keep you warm as you enjoy grilling outside in the crisp autumn like air.
Ashbourne White Blend
Ashbourne is a family owned winery based out of Walker Bay, South Africa with focus on two grapes, Pinotage and Sauvignon Blanc. Their goal is to make wines that are innovative and highly individual and yet filled with that “je ne sais quoi” that keeps you coming back for more. Here is a unique and impeccably balanced blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay that finds a way to be both fresh and full all in one delectable glass.
Fresh and vibrant from the start you will find citrus notes entwined with a soft herbaceous center, while the purity of fruit turns to flavors of white peach and kiwi that linger through a long yet clean finish. A wine that drinks well beyond its price, this would be just as at home next to your weekend fresh oysters and grilled scallops as it would with a handful of sea salt chips on a Wednesday
